Part of our Contemporary World Cinema series.

Directed by Ben Rivers and Anocha Suwichakornpong | UK/Taiwan | 94 mins

Our first Contemporary World Cinema pick of the season is Krabi, 2562 (2019) - an exciting collaboration from experimental film superstars Ben Rivers (Trees Down There) and Anocha Suwichakornpong (By The Time It Gets Dark). Celebrated by TIFF Wavelengths last year, this unconventional documentary is an innovative dive into the world of a Thai tourist community, using fiction, interviews, and oral traditions to render a vibrant and trippy experience that begs to be seen on the big screen. The film captures the gorgeous sights of the Thailand coast on super 16mm film as our narrator, a mysterious woman with morphing identities absorbs the local history and traditions with a surreal detachment. Reflecting on themes of time, place, and memory, Krabi, 2562 captures a striking moment in its titular town where the past and the present collide, frequently and uneasily.

Community Partner: Calgary Underground Film Festival

Founded in 2003, the Calgary Underground Film Festival is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to programming films that defy convention. Through the screening of contemporary works in various categories that include: feature, documentary, animation and shorts – we bring Calgarians a unique roster of films rarely seen in North American theatres.

In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge that this screening takes place on Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory, as well as the oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we acknowledge all Nations, Indigenous and non, who live, work and play, as well as help steward this land, honour and celebrate this territory.
