For our special holiday season screening, we are pleased to present The Bishop's Wife (1947), starring Cary Grant, David Niven, and Loretta Young.
David Niven plays an overworked bishop concerned with the construction of a new cathedral, Loretta Young is his overlooked wife, and Cary Grant is the angel sent by God to help the bishop get his priorities straight. But as the angel and the bishop's wife spend more time with each other around the Christmas season, she finds herself falling in love!
Directed by Henry Koster, who would later helm the similarly imaginative Harvey starring Jimmy Stewart, The Bishop's Wife put off some audiences in 1947 because of its religious themes, but its theme of valuing the people in your life over material concerns is timeless and universal. With irresistibly charming performances from its cast, and wonderful moments of comedy, romance, and pathos, The Bishop's Wife is a well loved but often overlooked holiday classic.
In the spirit of respect, reciprocity and truth, we honour and acknowledge that this screening takes place on Moh’kinsstis and the traditional Treaty 7 territory, as well as the oral practices of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. Finally, we acknowledge all Nations, Indigenous and non, who live, work and play, as well as help steward this land, honour and celebrate this territory.
