Polyester (1981) in Odorama

  • Globe Cinema 617 8 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB, T2P 1H1 Canada (map)

Directed by John Waters | USA | 86 mins

Welcome to the one and only, the scent-sational Polyester, now in stunning ODORAMA!

The creation of Polyester is a tale as old as time. After witnessing one of John Waters' films, renowned critic Archer Winsten famously quipped, "If you ever see Waters' name on the marquee, walk on the other side of the street and hold your nose." Waters was so taken by this review that he read it three times over and was instantly inspired to create a film that DID stink. Thus, Polyester was born.

John Waters’ 1981 film Polyester marked a milestone with its newfound, almost Hollywood budget for the B-list marvel. Embracing his scandalous nature, Waters introduced ODORAMA, an olfactory gimmick that transformed the film going experience. During screenings, audiences used scratch-and-sniff cards to immerse themselves in Francine Fishpaw’s world, played by Waters’ muse, Divine.

Prepare to smell like you’ve never smelled before, because this screening of Polyester will be in Odorama! You'll laugh, gasp, and perhaps be scandalized by the sights and sounds. But nothing will prepare your nostrils for the aromatic adventure of this groundbreaking gimmick, leaving moviegoers astonished and amused.

In Polyester, suburban housewife Francine Fishpaw (Divine) navigates a crumbling world as her husband confesses infidelity, her daughter announces a pregnancy, and her son is suspected of bizarre crimes. Amidst chaos, she finds an unexpected romance with heartthrob Todd Tomorrow (Tab Hunter). Polyester is a cheeky comedy with outlandish characters and irreverent humor, starring Divine, the (drag) queen of flamboyance.
