Flesh for Frankenstein (1973)

  • Globe Cinema 617 8 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB, T2P 1H1 Canada (map)

Directed by Paul Morrissey  | United States, Italy, France | 95 mins

Released in North America as Andy Warhol's 3D Frankenstein, the famous pop artist's name might have been used for promotion but as a producer of the film he was mostly hands-off. The auteur here is writer/director Paul Morrissey, the avant-garde filmmaker behind Warhol-backed film projects like Chelsea Girls. A self-proclaimed "right-winger", Morrissey's intensely gory and sexual horror-comedy, like its partner Blood for Dracula, is ultimately a satire aimed at critiquing sexual liberty and individual freedom for perverting traditional morality and values. Of course, to get that across we must see all this immoral behaviour in full shocking schlocky sensationalism!

Over the top violence and sexuality is brought to vivid life with camp classic performances from actors Udo Kier and Arno Juerging, as well as the Space-Vision stereoscopic 3D system the film was shot in. Originally rated X by the MPAA for sexuality, nudity, and violence, Calgary Cinematheque's presentation of this cult favourite is rated R meaning no admittance to persons under 18, and will be shown in anaglyph 3D with nostalgic red-and-cyan glasses provided at the door!

Rating: R for detailed portrayals of gory violence and sexualized violence.

No minors allowed.
