Part of our Library Screening Series at the new Central Library, this event includes a short lecture/guided discussion on the cultural and artistic significance of the film prior to the screening.

Based on the 1929 best-selling novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet On The Western Front was the first major war film of the sound era. The film follows the life of a German soldier and his experience on the Western Front during WWI. The film was a critical and financial success at the box office, was banned in Germany by the Nazi government, and won two Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Since then its timeless essence has never faded and it has inspired countless other war films like Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. It is a reminder that war comes at great cost.

Please join us on Remembrance Day at the new Central Library for a free screening of All Quiet On The Western Front, preceded by a short lecture by Calgary Cinematheque Society Board President Jennifer Cecconi, who will discuss the impact of cinema on our shared recollections of history and the influence of this classic 1930 WWI film.
