Eyes on artists

For many, the creative process is one of mystery and magic. But the power of documentary cinema has long allowed us a behind-the-scenes peek at the inner workings of both individual creative genius and the creation of large-scale mass-media art. When the documentaries themselves become works of art—created by filmmakers with their own singular visions and agendas—when the creation of art becomes the subject of art, we must consider where the line is drawn between truth and illusion, and what each work can tell us about how art is made and the artists who make it.

In this series, Calgary Cinematheque invites you to experience an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at great artists across multiple mediums, seen through the eyes of some of the most celebrated documentary filmmakers of the past seventy years.

Burden of Dreams (1982)
Directed by Les Blank
January 2, 2026

Les Blank was best known for his profiles of musicians when he took on the monumental task of documenting the making of Werner Herzog's equally monumental production Fitzcarraldo. F for Fake (1973)
Directed by Orson Welles
January 15, 2026

This experiment in form by filmmaking master Orson Welles has become a touchstone in the development of the “visual essay” format now popular in online video culture. Welles’s film is a conscientious magic trick—supposedly a profile of art forger Elmyr de Hory, it also explores hoax biographer Clifford Irving, Welles’s own history of famous hoaxes, and even the relationship of his mistress, Oja Kodar, to Picasso.

Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991)
Directed by Alek Keshishian
January 22, 2026

Capturing Madonna at the height of her pop-culture dominance during the Blond Ambition Tour, this influential and popular documentary straddles the line between gritty authenticity and highly manufactured spin. Music-video director Alek Keshishian worked with Madonna to create something that began as a concert film but evolved into a “warts-and-all” portrait of the pop star.
