Calgary Cinematheque's Response to COVID-19 ("coronavirus")

Our 13th Season has been one of our most special yet, but it is with a heavy heart that we announce that the remaining screenings of our season have been indefinitely postponed to support the effort to contain the spread of COVID-19 (“coronavirus”) in Calgary.

There have been no confirmed cases connected to Calgary Cinematheque, the Globe Cinema or the Plaza Theatre, but it is our priority to ensure the safety and health of our audience, staff, and volunteers.

If you have already purchased tickets to Vive L’Amour (March 19th) or Krabi, 2562 (March 26th), you can expect a refund within the week. These screenings, as well as our free screening of Like Water for Chocolate (March 22nd) at the Central Library have been indefinitely postponed, but we are making an effort to reschedule them once public health concerns subside. Punch Passes and Admit One Vouchers from this season will still be valid when these screenings are rescheduled, as well as when our next season commences.

Please follow our Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages and subscribe to our newsletter to get the latest info on upcoming screenings, as well as announcements for our 14th Season.

We also have a slew of streaming recommendations where you can enjoy the kinds of films we love from the comfort of your own home:

  • Cinematheque fans are likely already aware of the Criterion Collection, but if you’re looking to binge some significant cinema as health concerns blow over, this might be the perfect time to subscribe to the Criterion Channel. This platform features a variety of unforgettable films that Calgary Cinematheque can vouch for.

  • Anyone with a Calgary Public Library membership can create an account with Kanopy. This free streaming platform gives you access to 10 titles per month, and features an excellent range of classics, world cinema, indie movies, art films, and documentaries.

  • If you prefer a more curated option, MUBI features a mixture of rare restorations, classic cinema, and brand-new premieres. The platform is also free for film students.

  • If all else fails, stick with with tried and true streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Crave. Or just bring out your favourite Blu-ray, DVD, VHS or laserdisc. Regardless of what you’re watching and where you’re watching it from, remember to wash your hands frequently and stay up to date on news regarding COVID-19.
